In 1965, a group of CHS graduates at Foothills Junior College
got together to form a band.
From Rich Young:
"Original lineup for the Chocolate
Watchband:
Mark Loomis, guitar
Ned Torney, guitar
Jo Kemling, keyboards
Rich Young, bass
Gary Andrejasevich, drums (still Watchband drums..only original member
still in the band)
Danny Phay, vocals.
"There have been several persons/personalities in the Chocolate
Watchband
over the years. Pete Curry (Pam Curry's brother) actually played one of the
first Chocolate
Watchband gigs on drums on the beach near the KDON studios
south of Santa
Cruz after a Foothill/Cabrillo football game. That was the
only gig he
played with the band. Gary is a CHS alum from a class or
two behind us. His older brother, Doug,
was in our class. The name Chocolate Watchband was coined
by Lee Donnelly and Bob Anderson in
the student lounge at Foothill College one noon hour."
A compilation album (Melts in your Brain,
Not on your Wrist) was put together by Alec Palao, a later
band member. He says,"It is a 2 CD set that features everything
recorded by the 1960s line-ups of the group, including the
Cupertino High alumni. I compiled the package and there
are lengthy liner notes detailing the band's career, plus
tons of pix including shots of the original band in Calabasas
Park! The record label is Ace/Big Beat Records (www.acerecords.com).
It should be available from all standard retail websites
like Amazon,
CDNow, Collectors Choice etc. In the Bay Area, Amoeba Records
in Berkeley and San Francisco always have it in stock."
Rich says, "There are 2 cuts on the compilation that are the
very first two we ever cut
at Mateo Hi Fi studios in San Mateo. ("Don't Let The Sun
Catch You Crying"
cover of Gerry and the Pacemakers hit, and "Since You Broke
My Heart" an
Everly Brothers cover)." This compilation album is for sale
on Amazon.
